Travel Pin Map - as a display!

Happy new year Kreators!

To kick off 2018 I thought I would change my room around. So, I decided to create a pinboard display for above my bed. After looking at pinboard ideas on Pinterest I decided I needed a theme, I chose travel. Firstly because I love travelling and going to new places, and secondly because I found a really cute pin travel map that one of my fav youtubers created. This DIY is pretty basic, and you can interpret it however you want. The instructions are below - enjoy!

Materials:

-Pinboard

-Fabric of sufficient size to cover board

-Photos (I chose to print out my photos in a polaroid style. Officeworks provides this service and style, simply have a USB with your photos on it, plug it in, choose a size and print!)

-Print out of map of the world (I got an A3 download from this page)

-Map pins (Again, I got mine from Officeworks)

-Regular pushpins

-Paper and markers

-Rose gold spray paint (optional, I got mine for $6.50 from Bunnings)

-Decorative stickers (optional)

Method:

Covering a pinboard:

1. Firstly cover the pinboard (you may need another person). Spread your fabric out face down on a table. Then position the pinboard on top. Fold the edges around and in, (just like wrapping a present). Use push pins secure the fabric on the back of the board. Remember to hold tightly to avoid any ripples on the front.

Creating the map and display:

1. I got my world map from the website listed in the materials and printed and laminated it in A3 size at Officeworks. Once you have a world map position it in the centre of your pinboard and pin it down with push pins.

2. Now to prepare the 'map' pins. This is where you get some choices. For my travel map I wanted two different colours of pins, one to show where I have been, and one to show where I want to go, you don't have to do both but I think it looks really cute this way.

Now you may think I'm crazy so you can skip this step if you like. But I really wanted rose gold map pins - which unfortunately don't exist. So, I made them rose gold. Basically I got a piece of foam that we were going to throw out, and stuck some pins in it. Then using my spray paint FROM A DISTANCE I sprayed the pins - (trust me I learned from experience, if you get too close with the spray, the foam deteriorates, the pins fall down and get lumps of paint stuck to them) . I found that two coats was enough. For my other colour I simply got a hot pink Sharpie and coloured them in - and they looked great!

This is the spray paint I used from Bunnings⬇️

3. Now this is the fun part! Push the pins in your map according to one colour for where you have been (I chose rose gold), and another for where you want to go (I chose pink). As you can imagine, I had a lot more pink than rose gold!!

3. I then created a key for my map, you can do it anyway you want as long as you have a pin of each colour on it. See the picture below for how I did mine.

4. This is an optional step, but I decided to make my travel map a little more fun by adding some travel stickers.

5. And finally, surrounding my map I arranged all the photos of my family travels. After I was happy with it, I pinned them all down.

And there you go! As I mentioned earlier, there are different ways to do this DIY. If you like you can just take the map idea out of it, or you can keep the style of photos but of a different theme, or do it like I did it! Whatever you choose I hope you have as much fun as I did.
