Emoji Pillow
Hi! Sorry I haven't been posting lately - back to school! But now I'm spending more time sitting on my chair at my desk, I thought it would be fun (and more comfy) with a cute little pillow. I have recently discovered sewing, and thought I might do a DIY project involving the sewing machine, so this pillow seemed like a quick and easy project. I chose the đ emoji, because I thought it was cute and nice and simple to start off with.
I got the method from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwUlmyCSYtQ
The instructions are listed below, so enjoy!
Materials:
-yellow fabric (how much depends on size of pillow)
-red felt
-black felt
-sewing machine (not shown above)
-appropriately coloured thread
-clothing pins
-wadding/stuffing
-hot glue gun
-scissors
-pencil
-ruler
-scrap paper (for template)
-circular object (for template)
Instructions:
1. Before we begin it is important to have a template. So using your circular object, trace it on to scrap pieces of paper stuck together, to the size you want your pillow to be. Using your ruler, go around the circumference of the circle and make an outer circle 1cm from the original circle. Cut it out. Now using different scrap paper, cut out your heart eyes and mouth, keep trimming and re-tracing until you're satisfied with the size and shape.
2. Now with your yellow fabric fold it in half to create two layers. Then using your clothing pins, pin your circle template to the fabric. Now cut it out.
4. Now with your circular object, centre it on the fabric and trace it. You should now have an inner circle.
5. Now unpin the fabric from the template and then re-pin the fabric. This time, in a circular pattern with the heads of the pins all facing the same way.
5. Once you have your pinned fabric, pencil in an opening of where you will put the stuffing in, where you DON'T want to sew. Then sew along the inner circle line, making sure you leave that opening. While you're sewing take the pins out as you go.
You should now have a circular fabric with an open seam. Now to stop the fabric from fraying do a zig zag stitch on the very edge of the fabric. Make sure you don't sew the two seams together, do one side of the seam the whole way around, then flip it and do the other side.
6. Now to stop it from rippling, cut out little triangles all the way around, apart from your opening. Once your fabric looks like the sun (all triangles have been cut), carefully turn it inside out, filling out all the edges.
7. I then gave the fabric a quick iron just to smooth out any creases.
8. Now for the eyes and mouth. For the heart eyes, fold your red felt in half. On the closed side of the felt, trace around half of your heart template. Then cut it out and unfold it. Repeat this for the other heart and mouth. Tip: pencil will work on the black just make sure you press pretty hard and if you angle it correctly, it is really easy to see.
9. Once you have all of your felt shapes. Pug in your glue gun. Arrange your hearts and mouth where you want them on the fabric.
Then using you glue gun, quickly apply the glue to each felt shape, and stick it down, making sure that the open seam is AT THE BOTTOM.
10. Once the felt has dried, carefully stuff the pillow.
11. Once you are satisfied wiht your stuffing, using your glue gun, seal the opening. It shouldn't matter if it's too messy - (mine was) because it will be at the bottom. Wait for it to dry and presto! You're done! If it doesn't look like the glue is properly sealing the opening, or as it gets older it comes apart, sew it together properly with your sewing machine, but glue should do the trick for the moment.
I hope you enjoyed making this DIY as much as I did, remember you can choose any emoji you want - it's the same instructions! I know I will certainly be making more than one...
Thanks for reading and remember to keep checking for more DIY inspiration
