Glitter Organiser Boxes

Ahh glitter. Who doesn't like a bit of bling to add a little more pizzazz?

My inspiration for this DIY came from some empty Ferrero Rocher boxes. If you're not familiar with Ferrero Rocher, they are a brand of chocolate (that's really delish) that you can buy in hard plastic boxes. I thought they could be really useful to organise my things and decided to make them look pretty by adding some glitter. You can use the boxes for whatever you want, I used them to store my lip glosses and stationery. The instructions are listed below, enjoy!

Materials:

-Ferrero Rocher boxes (or really any small rectangular box that you want to reuse for something)

-Glitter

-Glitter shaker

-Mod Podge*

-Paintbrush

-Masking tape

-Scissors

-Something to pour some mod podge on to - I used an empty (and washed) plastic strawberry container. (Not shown above)

*I have researched that one of the most effective glues to use on hard plastic is Mod Podge, (I wasn't very surprised, as it is a popular material used for heaps of DIYs - I strongly suggest you get some) Mod Podge also acts as a sealant to stop the glitter from falling off (which was my main concern). I bought it at Eckersleys for $12.95.

Instructions:

1. Prepare your workspace. Lay newspaper down and have a plate ready to catch the glitter when use the glitter. I also suggest you use have a cup of water on standby for your paintbrush (which will be covered in fast drying glue).

2. Take all stickers and packaging off your boxes. Then rinse them.

3. Now tape the boxes where you DON'T want the glitter. I chose for my glitter to be in a simple strip around the bottom, so I taped above the strip. Make sure the tape is even and has a straight edge all around the box. I suggest you tape the lid to the box to make sure no glitter gets in (it’s a pain to get out).

4. Using your paintbrush, apply the Mod Podge where you want the glitter. You don’t have to be very precise, I would actually recommend putting the glue slightly on the tape, just to give it a really clean edge.

5. Next quickly shake the glitter on to the glue. Make sure you cover all the Mod Podge, especially around the curved edges. After you have covered it, give the box a quick shake on all faces to remove any excess glitter. It should now look like this:

6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each box. Remember, once you have finished with the Mod Podge, give your paintbrush a wipe and put it in the cup of water. Now let the boxes them dry. Although Mod Podge is meant to be a reasonably quick drying glue, I left mine overnight just to be on the safe side.

7. Once the glue has dried, it is time to apply the sealant. Pour some Mod Podge onto whatever your using (in my case a plastic strawberry container). Using your paintbrush, paint a layer of Mod Podge (not too thick) on the glitter. Do not be alarmed if it is totally white and looks like it has drowned out your glitter. That is how mine looked and they turned out fine as the glue definitely dries clear. Repeat this for all boxes. Now let them dry.

How mine looked with the sealant:

8. Finally, for the most satisfying part. Once you are sure the Mod Podge is dry, carefully peel off the tape and… voila! Try and leave the masking tape on for the shortest amount of time, otherwise it might leave some residue on the box, if this happens, read the note below this picture.

Note: Your masking tape may leave some sticky residue when you peel it off. Simply grab a scourer and scrub at it until it's gone, (be careful to not scrub the glitter off) then wipe it dry with a tissue.

You’re done! You now have some really cute, multipurpose glitter boxes!

I hope you have been inspired by this DIY (and organisation hack). If you have tried this I would love for you to share your results with me in the comment section below:) Thanks for reading and… Happy New Year!
